Cabaret Krúdó – performance night
10 minutes
Blue Horse, Budapest
2017.02.18.
We are attempting to rewrite the pattern of behaviour conveyed by the commonplace phrase who is not with us is against us.
Action: two Eastern European men speak. The Bulgarian in Hungarian, the Hungarian in Bulgarian. Eastern European phrases with a foreign accent. Many foreigners in the audience, English is their common language.
A woman plays music in the middle of the space, she is the main character, who can never be the main character. She plays not on an instrument, music without music. Her instrument: a clothes dryer. She collects pieces of clothing from the spectators and puts them on the dryer, tuning the metal bars of the dryer with them. In return, she hands out things from the shirt pockets on her breasts: sweets, erasers, screws, etc. All this without seeing or being seen. On her head there is a towel, her face is invisible, she becomes the a dryer herself with a cloth hanging from it. The performance ends with her randomly returning clothes to the audience, who can then wear other people’s clothes, or have to find their own clothes to exchange them back and forth.
The spoken text is distributed to audience members on strips of paper by a technical assistant at the beginning of the performance. On the paper there is a note: read it, too! As more and more people read it, the alien phrases becoming more cosy and comical while the sound intensifies. Music is the word, unfamiliar grammar is the rhythm. Cacophony. We understand each other less and less, and yet we are feel better to be together. Those who are not with us are beside us. Being together side by side is good.
